This project explores the underground music scene in Brighton through the lens of student culture alongside visual storytelling. It focuses on the local identity of the music scene within Brighton and the magazine created investigates how students engage with it through photography, interviews, and designed features. The publication highlights voices from the music scene and explores grassroots venues that define Brighton’s underground scene. A key section of the magazine includes an immersive photo feature documenting a performance by a local up-and-coming band, accompanied by behind-the-lens reflections. Additional sections written by students explore the influence of TikTok on music discovery, and include an in-depth interview with the head of a university of Sussex’ Albums Listening Society, offering insight into intentional listening and collective appreciation of full-length records. Designed with inspiration from experimental publications like Ray Gun, the layout embraces bold typography and collage aesthetics. Overall, the project seeks to document the students’ interaction with the city’s vibrant, often hidden, soundscape.
