More Than Hair: The Cultural Significance and History of Black Hair

The designs are inspired by More Than Hair: The Cultural Significance and History of Black Hair. They explore various aspects of Black hair—modern, natural, traditional, and the intricate depth within its textures and forms. The intention behind the work is to highlight the fine details and complexity of Afrocentric hair, showcasing the diverse shapes and styles each hairstyle can embody. The project also delves into historical contexts, examining how individual braids can tell stories, symbolise identity, and serve as tools for freedom and expression. Afro hair, in its natural form, is presented not merely as hair, but as a powerful symbol of rights, identity, and pride—a crown in its own right. Each design reflects a different moment in history and cultural interpretation, emphasising the importance of understanding the profound significance of Black hair.
